Sustainability Matters

It wasn’t long ago that leftover whey from cheesemaking was viewed as a waste product. A significant portion of milk is comprised of whey and liquids, meaning much of the farmers’ hard work and the resources they used were being wasted. Doing more with less is in the DNA of Milk Specialties Global and we continue to push our talented teams to find new ways to minimize waste and reduce energy usage.
Milk Specialties Global is a company built on relationships, and our suppliers are as important as our customers. We are closely connected with family-run farms and cheese companies across the United States, and we recognize the importance of maintaining a strong supply chain that is in line with customer and consumer expectations. We contract only with suppliers whose whey and milk are 100 percent rBGH-free, and many suppliers achieve further certifications. Suppliers are also surveyed on their environmental, social and economic initiatives to align our activities and expand our mutual viability.
As a global company, we are keenly aware of the impact our transportation practices have on greenhouse gas emissions. We have made great strides over the years to find more efficient ways to transport our products to market. In the past three years we have increased our use of intermodal transportation – shipping that links multiple modes of transportation. As a result, we depend more on fuel-efficient rail transportation to move product from our facilities to our distributors and customers.
While most of Milk Specialties’ facilities are not in areas considered to be water stressed, we make it a point to conserve this precious resource. We continue to focus on water reclamation and water purification by leveraging the latest technology to capture “waste” water and clean it using reverse osmosis filtration. We have made significant investments in our facilities over the past decade to clean and recycle the water we use. Milk Specialties Global continues to look to process technology and water use reduction, and coupling these efforts to the Clean Water Act initiatives, to ensure that we continue to be stewards of this precious resource.
